Jackie

Jackie Martin^[1] is a journalist at the Hopewell Bay Times. She originally meets Maddie while wanting information regarding Ursula and her arrest in relation to a cold case and watch. She later befriends Maddie after helping during a Scavenger Hunt and appears at recurring intervals throughout the remainder of the game.

She had a relationship once with the photographer Holden until he was fired from the newspaper but has been forced to interact with him again after he acquired a job taking photos of the mansion's progress for the local council.

Story[]

At the start of the Stone Garden area, Maddie is visited by a journalist named Jackie who writes for the local newspaper, the Hopewell Bay Times. Jackie asks about Grandma Ursula's arrest saying it is in relation to a cold case and the gold watch. Maddie says she knows nothing about the arrest and asks the journalist to leave. Jackie reappears while Maddie is on a scavenger hunt. She inquires into Grandma Ursula’s case but Maddie begins to become upset. After being asked to leave, Jackie apologizes and asks what Maddie is doing. She explains about the scavenger hunt that was set up for her and Jackie instantly gets excited saying that her “idea of heaven is an escape room with a ten minute timer." She continues with Maddie throughout the hunt, pushing her forward at times, while finding it strange there would be so many knives at the bottom of the pond.

Jackie runs into Holden who was at the mansion taking photographs but isn’t happy to see him. She admits dating him was a mistake and that all he wanted to do was look at himself on his phone. He doesn’t necessarily deny it and starts to get into an alternation with Maddie over the council and her lack of progress. She immediately becomes upset and Holden leaves. Jackie comforts Maddie and reminds her of the scavenger hunt, suggesting that she feels Maddie has found the last clue and their next spot would probably be the Pool House.

Jackie asks if the clues they found, R4U5L, would work as the safe code but unfortunately it doesn’t. Maddie then realized the clues were scrambled and that they should read R5UL4 which would spell Ursula’s name. Maddie finds a notebook full of drawings and Jackie thanks Maddie for allowing her to participate and hang out and decides to leave. (“Scavenger Hunt”)

Jackie appears again talking about the fun she had during the scavenger hunt and asks how Maddie is holding up. They are examining the cemetery and Maddie finds a grave with a C on it and wonders if it her grandfather Charlie. Jackie tells her she thinks it’s someone different. She then proceeds to tell Maddie about Clara Boulton, a local legend who fell in love with a man visiting from Europe, and defied her family wishes to marry him. She states that after the wedding Clara disappeared but that this had to be her grave. She tells Maddie that the Boulton Crypt should possess a lot more information which would help unravel the mystery. (“Cemetery”)
