The Grand Drive/Story

Maddie and Ursula meet at the estate. Maddie has never seen the place and wonders why Ursula kept it a secret. Ursula explains that Maddie needs to restore the estate or the city council will condemn it and tear it down. Maddie starts repairing the estate and meets Roddy, the local architect who offers to help.

Maddie finds the statue and Grandma tells her about Ignatius Boulton and the family fortune.

Three months earlier...

[INT. HOUSE]

Postman

*knock knock*

Maddie

A letter for Grandma? Looks very official...

Hmm, Grandma isn't around. Maybe I should check what's inside. Just in case...
Grandma has a mansion?! And it's going to be seized because of her unpaid taxes?!
Grandma!! Does our family really own a mansion in Hopewell Bay?!
They can't just seize it from us!! This must be a mistake, right?

Can we go there and see what's up? Pleeeease!

[EXT.]

Maddie

Grandma, I realize you never want to see the estate again, but...
Thanks for coming here with me.

Ursula

I don't know why you wasted your savings paying the back taxes on this old wreck, Maddie.

Maddie

It's our family home, and as the last surviving Boulton it's my duty to be here.
Plus, someone from the local council wrote and told me that we have to restore the estate or they'll condemn it and rip it down!

[THEY LEAVE - GATE OPENS]

Maddie

I bet they'll do it too, so I WON'T let that happen - I'm going to make this place look amazing.

[EXT. MANSION]

Maddie

This house is HUGE! Our family must have been a big deal in the past.

[URSULA REJOINS]

Ursula

Looks smaller than I remembered. Messier, too.

[EXT. GARAGE]

Maddie

You're right about the mess. It's no wonder the council wants to condemn it.

[URSULA LEAVES]

Maddie

Let's clear this up so we can start saving the estate! First, we need tools to clear a path in...

Maddie

Hello? Is someone there?

[OUT FRONT OF ESTATE - ENTER RODDY]

Roddy

Hello! I was passing by and, uh, thought I smelled something delicious baking.
Are you trying to get this old place back in shape? You're brave. I've heard so many strange stories about it.

Maddie

What kind of stories? What are you talking about??

Roddy

Uh, just silly local tales about the reason for it being so run-down. I did't mean to make you angry...

Maddie

Sorry - you didn't. I've just got a lot to do to restore the estate so the council won't condemn it.

Roddy

Ouch! The council here is tough - especially Penny Golightly. She's the head of the Infrastructure Committee, and she's, uh, pretty scary.
Maybe I can help out? I'm an architect, and I know a thing or two about getting homes through the renovation process.

Maddie

Why would you help me, Mr...?

Roddy

Took - Roddy Took. I've loved the look of this place since I moved into town. I'd hate to see Penny and her council rip it down.

Maddie

Hmm. Well, I'm Maddie, and I may just take you up on your offer. Thanks!

Grandma, do you know any strange stories about the estate? Are they the reason you kept me away from it?

Ursula

I don't know what you're talking about. Can we go home now?

Maddie

This is home! Oh, Grandma, can't you just try? What is it with you and this place, anyway?

Ursula

It's complicated. But I'll try - for you. I suppose the gardens are quite nice, in the right light...

Maddie

They're going to be beautiful when I'm finished! I will NOT let the council condemn this place.

Ursula

I believe you there. You've always been good at making and fixing things. Inventing is in your DNA!

Maddie

Huh? What do you mean?

Ursula

Never mind. Alright, we can stay awhile. just - watch where you dig, won't you?

Maddie

Who's this, Grandma?

Ursula

Him? That's Ignatius Montague Boulton. He's the one who built this place and made the family fortune.
Not that there's been any money for a long time! But he had some. Think he was born in about 1802.

Maddie

Hey, you DO know stories about the estate! And it's good to hear one.

Ursula

Don't get too used to it. But yeah. I guess I know some ancient history.

Maddie

Great! I want to learn all about Grandpa Charlie, and my parents, and...

Ursula

Some secrets are best left buried, Maddie. I'm off to bake.

[URSULA LEAVES]

Maddie

She's hiding something! I just wish I knew what it was - and why!
